Barbara Kern

Artist

I first realized my calling to art at an early age through the influence of my grandmothers. I was in awe of their artistic talents; they were a true inspiration. My Grandma Kern, a quilt maker, created blankets from her own clothes, and these blankets became family heirlooms. My Grandma Poole, a painter, didn't just paint on canvas but on clothes as well. She would take fabric or other objects and integrate it into the painting, creating an entirely new scene.

These women showed me there's no limit to creating.

Throughout my life I've collected a vast variety of things ("Found material" or "Found objects" as I like to call them) that drive the ideas of my art work. These items range from various metals to fibers of written words. Most anything can and does strike me as art materials. Everywhere I look I see items that are just waiting to become an artistic piece. My art is said to be Impulsive-shredded, arranged dramatically; unique in an out-of-the-ordinary kind of way.  In addition to this I paint in oil - portraits/some landscapes/abstract.
